This 63% Dark Chocolate with Candied Blue Butterfly Seed Blend is made cacao beans from Zorzal Cacao, the first cacao farm in the world to receive the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's Shade-Grown, "Bird Friendly®" Certificate.
So what is bird-friendly chocolate?
The term "Bird Friendly®" indicates that the chocolate is both shade grown and organic, as certified by the Smithsonian Institute. The Rainforest Alliance's (RA) "shade grown" certification is intended to help protect rainforests and the wildlife that lives within them. Cacao (chocolate) and coffee farmers can both seek these two common but distinct certifications. The Smithsonian Institution has higher standards than RA.
Scientific studies have demonstrated how cacao can be grown in harmony with native rainforest, benefiting birds and other wildlife while also providing value to local people in terms of saving the forest and creating income. Cacao can be grown as an understory plant with the taller native vegetation left intact, benefiting both native and migratory birds, according to research.
